The word “Eid” literally means happiness and celebration. The Eid ul Fitr is a very special occasion for the Muslims all over the world. They keep fast for the entire month of Ramadan, according to the guidelines of Allah the Almighty, and keep away from all the forbidden things. In its real sense, the Eid ul Fitr is only for the pious and God fearing Muslims who abide by His rules, and live their lives accordingly.
For those who obey Allah and act on his teachings for the entire month, Allah has promised a reward in the life hereafter. There is an additional day of celebration for the believers at the end of the month of Ramadan. That is the first day of the month of Shawwal, very commonly known as the Eid ul Fitr. It is a day of happiness and rejoicing. But the concept of celebration in the Islamic teachings differs from the other religions of the world.
In Islam, celebration does not mean a superfluous wastage of time and resources. Islamic teachings do not allow you to waste your money, or perform rash actions, that in turn lead to disorder in the society. All the new customs associated with Eid and other special events, like fireworks, joint parties, excessive wastage of food and drinks is all very shocking, as it is absolutely forbidden in Islam. A true Muslim celebrates the real essence of Eid, by helping his poor friends, and other people, both financially and morally. It enables the deprived and underprivileged to take part in the festivities of the Eid, and thank Allah.
On Eid, all the Muslims thank Allah for his blessings and everything else. After the thirty days of fasting, the Muslims take pleasure in consumption of special dishes, and meeting friends and family members. The day of Eid typically starts with the breakfast of the characteristic dish of Eid ul Fitr; “sewian”, or vermicelli cooked in milk and sugar. Then the men and children set off for the mosque to offer the Eid prayers. The rest of the day is spent in visiting friends and relatives, or inviting them over.
The best tradition of the Eid ul Fitr is the giving of “eidi”. It is most commonly in the form of cash, but can also be a material gift. It is given to the young, by the elders. Mostly children look forward to the Eid day throughout the year, simply because of new clothes and eidi.

Let us pray to Allah that he allows us to understand the real essence of Ramadan and Islam, and grant us with his innumerable blessings and rewards. Let us pray to Allah that he makes us devout Muslims, and grants us an Eid day full of happiness and joy. May we walk on His right path that will lead us to success and triumph in the next life.
